A Radio Jockey or RJ is radio show presenter. The RJ has their individual radio shows according to time slots during which they interact with their listener’s.

Through their show a Radio Jockey offers different type of entertainment elements such as songs, discussions, and telephonic conversation’s, games and contests, interviews, funny sections/ mimicry, live updates etc.

There are different course options to choose from with numerous colleges offering these courses.

Someone who wants to pursue a career in this field must possess some basic qualities like command of language and diction, creative outlook, individual ideas and traits, knowledge of latest trends and much more which is discussed later in the article.



  • Radio jockeying is a talent based field, still minimum education is required to move forward in this filed.

  • Minimum requirement for pursuing Diploma and Post Graduate diploma in Radio Programming and Broadcast Management is Graduation or Bachelor’s degree with an aggregate of 60% marks.



Entrance exams for Radio Jockey courses are conducted by Encompass Institute of Radio Management, while some institute conduct their individual screening test, voice test in case of certificate course.

ALL INDIA RADIO (AIR) conducts auditions for RJ’s every 3 Months in various cities especially metro cities. It a highly competitive selection process, selected candidates are given 2 months in house training with all the audio/radio equipment’s.



Clear diction, accurate pronunciation of words and language fluency is the basic requirement for the job; in addition to voice and pitch modulation, creativity, individuality and knowledge of music.

Spontaneous/ prompt attitude to twist and mould the situation accordingly.

The RJ should be able to write the show scripts, through detailed research of latest events.

They must be down to earth with an approachable attitude to connect better with the people.

Creativity is important for establishing relationship with audience, listeners, creating new segments in the show

Stay up-to-date with latest happenings, be observant.

Good Communication skills for better interaction and engagement.

Problem solving attitude to handle complaints, conflicts.

Must know how to control machines and equipment’s.

Helping, guiding, coaching and motivating others.

RJ should be able to convince and influence its listeners to but whatever he sells build a strong foundation of trust with audience.

He/she should be able to grab the listener’s attention by talking about currents trends, topics, sports, movies, and politics anything that people might want to discuss or know about.

RJ should have an interesting, energetic, diplomatic and engaging personality; they can make jokes and fun anecdotes for entertainment purposes, keeping in mind the sentiments of the larger population.

Must plan and organise the work schedule beforehand to accomplish institutional goals.



  • Research to prepare for programme/ show
  • Interviewing guest/celebrities about work, current events
  • Reading news, collecting information and passing it on to the listeners according to the managed time slot
  • Do telephonic interviews and conversations with listeners.
  • Introduce new music, provide comments on music, weather, traffic or general topics
  • Coordinate with show director assistants to select programme content according to listener’s requirements and tastes and what pulls more people towards that particular show.
  • Accept listeners request, announce musical selections, commercials, public announcements.
  • Conduct discussions with eminent people from different fields like music, art, current affairs, Bollywood etc.
  • Introduce and conduct games, quizzes, contests and make them interesting by offering a winning prize.
  • Be prepared beforehand and record the commercials, songs, song lists etc.
