Difference between Fashion Designing & Interior Designing

Designing is making something beautiful, beautifying an object, place or commodity. We deal with designing in our daily life. Application of design starts right from what wear to where we are; everything around us involves designing.

Over the years, the field of Designing has become more specialized and employers give more importance to academic and professional background.

Fashion Designing

Fashion Designing deals with catching attention of the eye, in human wears- apparels, footwear etc. Fashion designers design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. They design clothing according to the situation, occasion, taste and preference of the demands of the customers.

Eligibility: Candidates who want to pursue graduation in Fashion Designing must have completed their 10+2 from any stream (Science, Commerce or Humanities) from a recognized board.

Important Entrance Examinations:

  • NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) Entrance Test
  • SET (Symbiosis Institute of Design) Entrance Test
  • NID (National Institute of Design) Entrance Test

Interior Designing

Interior Designing is related to architecture and deals in beautifying interior settings like home, office. The interior designer can specialize in residential houses, flats, workplaces, museums, galleries, shopping malls, conference centers, theatres, gyms, hotels, restaurants, pubs, cafes, nightclubs, schools, universities, hospitals and in many more places.

Studying engineering or architecture before specializing in interior designing can be helpful for the students.

Eligibility: Candidates who want to pursue graduation in Interior Designing must have completed their 10+2 from Science stream from a recognized board.

  • CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design)
  • AIEED (All India Entrance Exam for Design)
  • NID (National Institute of Design) Entrance Test

Fashion Designing Vs Interior Designing


One can pursue Fashion Designing and Interior Designing after pursuing after graduation from any given field be it B.Com or engineering. Diplomas as well as Post graduation degrees are available for both Fashion Designing and Interior Designing courses.

Fashion designing & Interior Designing have huge scope in India as well as in abroad. The main thing is that it depends on a person’s interest that which course he/she wants to pursue and in which field one is most passionate about.
